My friend Lindsey and I have a fun tradition: We like to have our one-on-one Bible study over a brew and dinner in Broad Ripple. Last time we met, it was blisteringly cold and rainy, so I was craving some good ole comfort food.
When Lindsey suggested Brugge Brasserie, I was immediately on board. What could be better than a steaming pot of mussels on a miserable day? Nothing, my friends. Absolutely nothing.
We split the Citron mussels, which came seasoned with lime juice, jalapenos, cilantro and onions. So delicious, and with the perfect amount of heat for some extra warmth on a cold day. Lindsey and I told our waiter to leave out the bread and the cone of fries to keep our meal on the healthy side and we splurged on a pint of local beer instead. Brugge’s mussels come in 2 lb pots, so needless to say, we did not need the extra starch. We were stuffed!
Mussels are packed with health benefits! They are low in calories and fat, but high in protein. The tasty little mollusks are also nutrient rich. A 3-oz portion of mussel meat provides more than your recommended daily value of B-12, manganese, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
For a healthy and balanced meal, make sure to choose mussels that aren’t prepared in cream or butter based sauces, and substitute fries for a plate of greens like we did. If you’re eating at Brugge, I promise you won’t need the extra carbs anyway!
